George Houghton Memorial Shield

In a kind and fitting tribute to her late Husband, George Houghton, Pam, his widow, donated the proceeds from the collection held at his wake to the Spitfire Club. It was decided that George’s name should live on by way of a Memorial Shield presented annually to the best NCO in 2025 (Bishop Auckland) Squadron, Royal Air Force Cadets. The presentation is to be held every November as part of the annual award ceremony the cadets hold.

The shield was handed to Flt Lt Ian Pepper, the Officer Commanding 2505 Squadron on the 16th May when the Squadron was being hosted by Crook & District RAF Association Branch 475 at their Headquarters to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of ‘Operation Chastise’, more commonly known as the Dambuster Raid.
